我们的老房子是今年三月份 rented out 的， 是一个很有趣的 family， 或者说是俩个 families 的组合。 他们都是美国人。 One divorced lady with one teenage girl and one teenage boy, one divorced man with two teenage boys, and they have dated for few years, became engaged recently, and decided to move together. Both of them had a smaller house, but felt the need to rent a larger house for 6 people living together. They liked our house very much after first visiting, and signed a two year lease. They are very nice people, tried not to bother us with small things. The lady worked as a property manager for apartments, so she knows very well about renting stuff. The contract was provided by her, and it had the clause that if the repair or replacement is under $100, then the tenant will be responsible for the expense, and they even don't need to talk to us regarding the repair or replacement.

Everything is OK except that the larger AC unit was not working and my wife had to get someone to replace the whole AC unit for $4,000 few months ago in the end of summer.

Two days after we returned home from our skii trip, my wife received email from the lady with few problem of the house: the refrigerator was not working properly (only three years old), the garbage disposal in the kitchen is leaking, and the sliding door needs some replacement of the roller. We went there two days ago to check on the items and arranged for repair. Yesterday while my wife was talking to the lady regarding arrangement for the plumber to go to the house to make the repair, the lady asked my wife if she is available at 6 PM because the lady needs to talk to her in person, and she said "there is a small problem, but actually a big problem". My wife told me their phone conversation afterwards, an I said to her that it is possible that the man got laid off. My wife called her back saying that we were curious and very concerned with the potential "problem", and the lady told my wife that in Nov, the man was found to have Multiple Myeloma (a type of cancer of the plasma cells), and he needs to go for bone marrow transplant and other therapies, probably will quit working for few months. And it also seems that there are other issues between them, making it sound like they are not going to get married anyway.

我们当然同意他们想把俩年的 lease 改成一年 in this special situation。

新年前听到这个不好的消息， 真为他们难过。
