An economist has claimed the White House used his work in calculating the tariffs, but made a basic mathematical error which caused trade officials to grossly overestimate how much each country “owed” the US.

 

'The Office of the US Trade Representative released its methodology and cited an academic paper produced by four economists, including me, seemingly in support of their numbers,' he said.

'But they got it wrong. Very wrong.'
