A question: 1 or 2 story house

Same square footage (say 2000), which would you prefer - 1 story or two story house? I prefer 1 but my huby 2. I thin for a small house under 2000 sqft, I would feel less crowded in 1 story, but my huby feels that upstair provides more privacy. Which one should be expensive?
