Perimeter and field cracks
There are two major types of cracks—cracks at the perimeter and cracks in the field. Perimeter cracks occur at the location where two planes meet—a wall and ceiling or two walls, whereas field cracks occur at horizontal and vertical drywall joints. Cracks at the perimeter are typically caused by seasonal movement of the framing, which stresses the corners where two stiff planes of drywall meet. Cracks in the field are usually caused by misaligned framing, poor finishing techniques, or incorrect spacing and fastening of the drywall sheets. Both types of cracks can also result from poor control of the environmental conditions during the drywall job.

The interior environment
Controlling the interior environment plays a major roll in preventing cracks. If the interior environment during the drywall job isn't similar to the conditions during occupancy, then the quality of the drywall job won't matter. Even an excellent drywall job won't be able to compensate for a drastic temperature and humidity change the materials will experience when the homeowner moves in. A drastic change in the interior environment will cause the framing and drywall to move, which will inevitably cause cracking at corners and in the field of the drywall.
