Trade and debt are two different things. Why do not mix them? China and Japan can trade with Yen/RMB in contract without any soveriegn debt involved.

For example, as I know, Chinese solar panel companies export to European countries with contract in Euro, even though European countries never bought any China sovereiegn debt. These companies buy some currency future to offset currency risks.
