1904年，美国在圣路易斯城举行万国博览会，当时的中国正值戊戌风云与辛亥革命之间的相对平静时期，慈禧渡过难关被迫实行新政，打开大门面向世界的机会使清政府参加圣路易万国博览会成为可能。
清廷任命贝子溥伦赴美参加博览会，多省士商随行。溥伦1904年3月4日亲率代表团离开京城，6月初，伦贝子一行抵达圣路易斯博览会。在这次世博会上，中国产品获奖颇丰，中国商人所携产品几乎销售一空，获得了较高评价，中国茶磁赛会公司的红茶、绿茶在博览会上被独推为第一，获得超等文凭（奖状）。
