Because you used "Chinese English" in your questions...:) . They would have known what you were talking about had you said "The hillbilly cat" that was his nickname. (Please note: 'hillbilly' has similar meaning as 'redneck'. Calling someone 'hillbilly' usually not a compliment in English.)
