Leevi Madetoja: Complete Symphonies
Iceland Symphony Orchestra
Petri Sakari, Conductor

Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja (1887-1947) studied music with Sibelius in Helsinki (1906-1910), with d'Indy in Paris (1910-1911) as well as in Vienna and Berlin (1911-1912).

His music is strongly influenced by the traditional music of his home region, Ostrobothnia. His three symphonies are based on the legacy of Sibelian and Russian romanticism, Gallic clarity and folk elements.

Illuminating a strong Sibelius flavor, Madetoja made a bold entry with Symphony No. 1, with many additional influences from Richard Strauss, the Russian post-nationalists, Reger and the French. The sombre Symphony No. 2 was written during the civil war and could be described as a war symphony. His finest works are considered the opera The Ostrobothnians, Symphony No. 3, Comedy Overture, the ballet Okon Fuoko, and his songs for male choir. An excerpt from the third and fourth movements of his Symphony No. 3 is heard in the Finnish movie The Man Without a Past.
