Bloomberg Cheatsheet

 

 

 

Bloomberg Access: 

    Bloomberg is an online database available only on a dedicated Bloomberg workstation, providing 24-hour current and historical financial quotes, commodity market and economic statistics, business newswires, and descriptive information, research and statistics on over 52,000 companies worldwide. In the Foster Business Library, the Bloomberg workstation is located in the Electronic Reference Area on Public PC #20; it may be identified by the red card on top of the monitor. Use of this workstation is limited to current University of Washington students, faculty and staff.

     

Bloomberg Cheatsheet: 

  • Additions and deletions of companies in the major stock indices:
      Enter ADD and hit the green GO key. Data is available for the following indices: S&P 500, S&P Midcap 400, S&P SmallCap 600, DAX, DAX 100, and Nikkei 225. Arrangement is by year and extends back to the mid 1990's.

     

  • Adjusted and raw beta:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol; hit the yellow EQUITY key; hit the green GO key; enter BETA; hit the green GO key.

     

  • American Depositary Receipts (ADRs):
      Enter ADRM and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Annuities (U.S.):
      Enter ANNU, then hit the GO key.

     

  • Average yields for Moody's and S&P rated corporate bonds:
      For Moody's, enter MOOD and hit the yellow INDEX key; hit the GO key; for S&P, enter SPWC and hit INDEX; hit GO.

     

  • Bloomberg certification:
      For instructions for enrolling in and taking Bloomberg certification classes and to view course descriptions, enter BU (for Bloomberg University) and hit the GO key; choose #7 (Product Certification). There are two tracks, equity and fixed income; certification is available in either or both of them. Each track consists of twelve classes, with about 15 hours needed to complete one track. Additional elective classes are also offered.

     

  • Bond data and information:
      For yield curves, enter FMCI and hit the green GO key.

  • Brand names:
      Enter your company ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key, enter RELS; hit the green Go key; pick #15 for a list of company brands.

     

  • Collateralized debt obligation tranche ratings:
      Enter RATC MTGE, and hit the green Go key. Data goes back to about 1969.

     

  • Company geographic segmentation:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key and type DES7.

     

  • Company insider holdings:
      For the holdings search main menu, enter the company's ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key, enter PHDC, and hit the green GO key. For specific insider holdings, enter the ticker symbol of the company, hit the yellow EQUITY key, and hit the green GO key. Choose COMPANY INFO from the menu, then MANAGEMENT PROFILE. Choose an executive and select REPORTED HOLDINGS.

     

  • Company institutional ownership:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key, enter HDS and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Company market capitalization, total debt, and cash:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol, hit the EQUITY key, then enter FA and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Company product segmentation:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol and hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter DES6 for the company's product segmentation and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Company value versus its peers in an industry:
      Enter the company's ticker symbol and hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter RV and press the green GO key. For the relative value of companies in an industry, enter IBQ for Industry Analysis. Choose an industry and then enter RV and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Convertible bonds:
      Enter TNI EQL and hit the green GO key for news stories about convertible bonds. Enter CCDR and hit the green GO key for a world-wide debt calendar, including convertibles.

     

  • Corporate action calendar:
      Enter CACT and hit the green GO key. You can search by date, by corporate action type, by country, and by company name for details on specific corporate actions such stock splits, stock dividends, stock buybacks, spin-offs, name changes, ticker symbol changes, joint ventures, class actions, corporate meetings, debt redemptions, and more.

     

  • Country political risk:
      Enter EIU and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Credit card industry:
      Enter CRR and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Credit default swaps:
      Enter CDSD and hit the green GO key.

  • Dead corporate bonds:
      Hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter RELS and hit the green GO key; at the Related Securities screen, either CORPORATES BY COMPANY or CORPORATES BY TICKET (listed under Debt Securities).
      On the screen that appears with the list of bonds, change the pull down menu on the right from EXCLUDE: MATURED/CALLED to EXCLUDE: NONE. The screen will refresh with a list of all the bonds for that company that have ever appeared in Bloomberg.

     

  • Delisted companies:
      Enter CACT and hit GO. Select CORPORATE ACTION TYPE 7, for delisting. The amber-colored year field may be changed.

     

  • Detailed company information:
    •  
      • ANR for analyst recommendations.
      • BQ for equity summary and Bloomberg quote providing overview of key price data, fundamentals, and news on selected equity.
      • CACS for corporate action calendar.
      • COMP for comparable returns against 2 other securities or indices.
      • CN for company news.
      • MCN for most read company news.
      • DES for company description.
      • DVD for dividend/split history.
      • EE for earnings estimates.
      • ERN for earnings.
      • FA for financial analysis.
      • HDS for institutional and insider holdings.
      • HG for historical price graph.
      • HP for historial price table.
      • MGMT for management profiles.
      • PGEO for product segmentation.
      • PV for peer valuation.
      • QM for quotes from the foreign exchanges on which an equity trades.
      • RELS for related securities (equity, debt, preferred, money market securities).
      • RV for relative value for customized peer group analysis.
      • SI for short interest (usually monthly)
      • Enter ticker symbol, hit the Equity key, and hit GO; as an example, SBUX [Equity Key] HP [GO] for Starbuck prices. Or use shortcuts; frequently used shortcuts include:

     

  • Earnings estimates:
      Enter your company ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter EE and hit GO.

     

  • Earnings per share (EPS) data and EPS growth:
      For earnings per share (EPS), enter the ticker symbol of your company, then hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter ERN and hit GO.

     

  • Economic data (historical and current) for countries worldwide:
      For world economic statistics, enter ECST; hit the green GO key.
      SEE ALSO: LexisNexis Academic; go to News, then World News, then to the news source European News; select the publication Political Risk Service.

     

  • Emerging market countries and companies:
      Enter EMKT and hit GO.

     

  • Energy industry, including prices and production:

     

  • Exchange rates for currency:
      Hit the yellow F-11 Currency key and then the green GO key. For the best and worst performing currencies, enter WCRS and hit GO.

     

  • Exchange traded funds:
      Enter EXTF and hit the GO key.

     

  • Hedge fund performance, evaluation and rankings:
      For the hedge fund home page, enter HFND and hit GO. To rank hedge fund performance, enter FPC and hit GO. To view hedge fund ranking tables, enter STAT, hit GO, and select 19. For current news on hedge funds, enter NI HEDGE and hit GO.

  • Help:
      On any Bloomberg page, press the HELP key for additional information. Or type a keyword and press the HELP key. For online chat with the 24/7 Bloomberg Help Desk, press the HELP key twice. For the transcript of a help chat, enter HDSK.

     

  • High yield bonds including ratings:
      For high yield bond indices, enter HYI and hit the green GO key. For the high yield bond menu, enter HYM and hit the green GO key. For bond ratings definitions, enter RATD and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Historical betas:
      Enter your tcompany's ticker symbol, hit the yellow EQUITY key; hit GO. Next, enter BETA and hit GO; specify the date range for historical information.

     

  • Historical options prices:
      Enter your company's ticker symbol, the yellow EQUITY key, and GO. Enter OMON (for Option Monitor) to produce all the current options for your company. Highlight and hit the option you wish; select GPO, from the menu, for a current graph of the option price. Change the date range to the time period desired and hit the Page Forward key to obtain your data for the time period of your choice.

     

  • Index information for a specific company:
      Enter your company's ticker symbol and hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter WGT and hit GO, for a list of all indexes in which that company is a member. To obtain more information on an individual index from that list, select the one you are interested in, and key in DES and enter, for descriptive data on the index.

     

  • Industry profile:
      Key in IBQ and hit the yellow EQUITY key for Bloomberg's industry analysis.

     

  • Initial public offerings (IPO's):
      Enter your company's ticker symbol and hit the yellow EQUITY key; enter DES, hit GO. Page forward to page 4. To access IPO News, type NI INI and hit 'Go'.

     

  • Interest rates worldwide:
      Enter MMR and hit GO to access the Money Rate Monitor.

     

  • International Monetary Fund countries:
      Hit the yellow EQUITY key and enter IMF; hit the green GO key.

     

  • Intraday quotes for equities and indices:
      For equities, key in the stock's ticker symbol and hit the yellow EQUITY key and the green GO key. Choose Today's Markets for intraday trading data; dates and time intervals can be changed.
      For indices, key in the index symbol, hit the Index key, key in GIT, and hit GO. As an example, for the S&P 500, key in SPX INDEX GIT and hit GO.

     

  • Islamic banking and finance:
      Enter ISLM and hit GO.

     

  • Jobs:
      Enter JOBS and hit GO.

     

  • League tables:
      Enter LEAG and hit GO.

     

  • Libor rates, current and historical:
      For current Libor rates, enter MMR and hit GO. For Libor rates, enter LR, and hit GO. For fixings history, enter BBAM and hit GO.

  • Management changes:
      Enter N (for news) and hit GO. Enter PEOPLE in the search box and then pick 6. Who's News—People.

     

  • Mergers and acquisitions:
      Enter MA and hit GO.

     

  • Multiple classes of stock:
      To identify companies with multiple classes of stock, enter EQS and hit GO. In the amber box under Add Screening Criteria, type desired screening criteria and choose from suggested Top Matches. Type multiple shares available to find securities with this attribute.

     

  • Municipal bond ratings:
      Enter STGO and hit GO for state issued bonds. Enter CTGO and hit GO for city and county issued bonds.

  • Mutual fund performance:
      Enter FPC and hit GO.

     

  • People:
      For a specific person, enter the person's name and hit HELP, then choose PEOPLE. To search for people, enter PEOP and hit GO for the people search menu. Fill in amber fields to specify age, education, organization, etc. Select 1)Search Bloomberg to execute the search.

     

  • Percentage weighting of companies in the S&P 500 Index:
      Enter SPX and hit the yellow INDEX key; then hit GO. Choose #11, Equity Index Analysis, then 4. WGT Member Weighting.

  • Real estate finance and securitization:
      Enter MCAL and hit GO. Enter IABS and hit GO.

     

  • Sharpe and Sortino Ratios for funds:
      Type the Fund Ticker symbol and press the EQUITY key; enter DES. As an example: PABFX EQUITY, DES
      To find the fund's ticker, type FL for Fund LookUp.

     

  • Short Interest by company:
      Enter your company ticker symbol, hit the yellow Equity key. Go to 4. Historical Prices and then to Short Interest.

     

  • Single stock futures prices:
      Type SFUT and hit GO. To look up a specific security, type CT and hit GO (for example, key in IBM US, hit EQUITY, type CT and hit GO).

     

  • Sovereign debt ratings:
      Enter CSDR.

     

  • Special Drawing Rights (SDRs):

     

  • Spin offs:
      Enter your company's ticker symbol and then press the yellow EQUITY key; enter CACS, and hit GO. To display the action calendar for all companies in a specific time frame, enter CACT and hit GO. To access the action calendar for a portfolio, choose a portfolio via PRTU, hit GO, then run PSCA and hit GO.

     

  • Stock splits and dividends:
      Enter your company ticker symbol, then hit the EQUITY key. Enter DVD and hit GO.

     

  • Ticker symbols:
      Hit the yellow CORP key, enter TK and hit GO.

  • Weather futures:
      Hit the INDEX key, and enter WTHF.

  • Yield curve analysis information:
      Enter YCRV and hit the green GO key.

     

  • Z-scores (Altman's Z-score models for bankruptcy predictors):
      Enter your company's ticker symbol and hit the EQUITY key; enter AZS and hit Go.
