1852年夏季，福斯特偕妻子到肯塔基州的巴特士顿去看望他的堂兄弟，费特里奥山丘美丽的风光，以及肯塔基农村的景物打动了他的心，促使他写下了这首脍炙人口、抒情优美、朴实真挚的歌曲，并流传至今。福斯特所处的时代，正是美国通过南北战争来解放黑奴的时代，他对美国黑人的同情，可以从他的许多著名歌曲创作中体现出来。
　　这首歌曲的音乐素材非常精练，几乎只是一句的反复，然而结构却十分完整，使人不感到单调。在副歌通常应出现高潮的地方，音调也并不高扬，就象安慰人的语调一样，十分亲切：“你别哭吧，姑娘”，整个歌曲的旋律琅琅上口，音域没有超过八度。
