IN XP, open Window Explorer,
select TOOLS-> folder option
uncheck "hide extersions for known type"
then you can see the complete file name (with extension)

Your problem may due to there are other extersions in you filename but not show up. So you actually change middle of filename but doesn't change file type to MP3
