谢默斯希尼于1939年4月13日出生在北爱尔兰的贝尔法斯特西北面30英里的一个农场，是家里9个孩子最大的一个。希尼自小接受正规的英国教育， 1961年以第一名的优异成绩毕业于贝尔法斯特女王大学英文系。毕业后当过一年中学教师，同时大量阅读爱尔兰和英国的现代诗歌，从中寻找将英国文学传统和德里郡乡间生活经历结合起来的途径。1966年，以诗集《一位自然主义者之死》一举成名。主要诗集还有《通向黑暗之门》(1969)、《外出度冬》(1972)、《北方》(1975）、《农活》(1979)和《站台》 (1984)、《山楂灯》（1987）、《幻觉》（1991）及《诗选》（1980）等。
1995年，由于他的诗“具有抒情诗般的美和伦理深度，使日常生活中的奇迹和活生生的往事得以升华”，希尼荣获诺贝尔文学奖。

Mid-term Break

I sat all morning in the college sick bay
Counting bells knelling classes to a close,
At two o'clock our neighbors drove me home.

In the porch I met my father crying--
He had always taken funerals in his stride--
And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.

The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram
When I came in, and I was embarrassed
By old men standing up to shake my hand

And tell me they were 'sorry for my trouble'
Whispers informed strangers that I was the eldest,
Away at school, as my mother held my hand

In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.
At ten o'clock the ambulance arrived
With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.

Next morning I went up into the room. Snowdrops
And candles soothed the bedside I saw him
For the first time in six weeks. Paler now,

Wearing a poppy bruise on the left temple,
He lay in the four foot box as in a cot.
No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.

A four foot box, a foot for every year.
