The Doors著名的成军故事是这样的∶ 1965年的上半年，Jim Morrison都在不停的写诗，此年夏天Jim Morrison从UCLA电影学院毕业，这是一个意义重大的夏天，他与家庭断绝了关系，搬出了公寓开始四处流浪。在学校就学时，Jim Morrisin对音乐毫无兴趣，他的大脑里只有电影，神学，潜意识和剧本，但在这个季风多变的夏天，Jim Morrison在美国加州威尼斯海滩散步时，遇到了UCLA的同学Ray Manzarek。Jim请Ray在沙滩上坐下，紧闭著双眼开始低吟他当时正在写的歌曲　诗歌之一Moonlight Drive的第一段。根据传说，Morrison吟诵出这些诗句∶让我们泅泳到月球　嗯，让我们攀越浪潮　穿越为隐藏而沈睡的城市夜晚。当他念完後，Manzarek停顿了一下，然後说∶「这是我这辈子听过最棒的歌词，我们来组个摇滚乐团赚大钱。」Jim马上爽快地答应∶「没错，这正是我脑子里一直在想的。」于是The Doors便产生了，随后Manzarek 在印度教超自然冥想课认识了吉他手Robbie Kreiger一个受过古典吉它良好训练的却总是睡眼惺松的布鲁斯高手，和鼓手John Densmore，传统上鼓手是乐队的傻瓜。但John却曾主修过心理学和物理. The Doors没有傻瓜--鼓手也不例外。Jim Morrison并非是个天生的音乐家，他天生是位诗人，他那极高的艺术才华和天赋终归会以某种形式表现出来，起先是电影，以后是音乐。 在1966年，The Doors在一家俱东部London Fog中寻到了一个演唱的机会，虽然这些表演得不到任何的报酬，但俱乐部给了他们一个展示才能的机会。在London Fog中演出时，Jim Morrison认识了他的嬉皮情人Pamela Courson，一位美丽而聪慧的女子，她伴随着Jim Morrison渡过了以后的岁月。在1966年中The Doors被当地最有名的俱乐部Whiskey a-go-go相中，在秋季到来之前和Elektra签订了合约并录好了第一张专辑“The Doors”。 最後成为作品永垂不朽的摇滚乐偶像。
