Peace Needs Ammo, and Europe Can’t Fill the Void Left by the US

Sloviansk – In the past few hours, the Russian Federation has launched 460 high-explosive drones and 22 other missiles of various types to strike energy targets in Kyiv and five other regions of Ukraine.

Six of those drones crossed into Ukrainian airspace, ending up in Moldova and Romania without being neutralized in time. Ukrainian air defenses still shot down a large portion of the ballistic threats, proving the effectiveness of the Patriot and Samp/T defense systems and the algorithms developed in Kyiv almost three years ago. All of those Russian missiles were recently produced.

As President Zelensky noted, this once again shows how essential weapons are, especially now when diplomacy is at stake. However, it also confirms that – after 12 years of war and sanctions – the Russian Federation still has the money and resources to produce these vectors of death.

Suffice it to say that a single Kinzhal missile contains around 48 non-Russian components: Moscow’s air force launched four yesterday, and Kyiv’s anti-aircraft defenses only shot down one. Depending on the version, an Iskander includes 15 to 32 parts produced abroad: of the seven fired, five were intercepted; a Kalibr has 45 foreign electronic components: eight launched, five neutralized.

Those asking Ukraine to «give up something for peace» should also have a clear conscience knowing that they have done the same. Especially those who pressured this country to give up its nuclear deterrent (the third world’s largest in 1994) in exchange for vague promises.

Investing in defense and maintaining strong sanctions on the aggressor is crucial today in light of attacks like those on European cities such as Kyiv, Dnipro, Lviv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. The six russian vectors that crossed into Moldovan and Romanian territory (the latest in a long list) highlight how close the rest of Europe is. However, separating these strikes from the situation on the front remains a serious but common mistake in the West, to the point that it has affected its stability.

Ukraine needs weapons right now when peace is being discussed. European weapons, however, that Europe itself does not have.

An interesting comparison of Russian and Ukrainian forces compiled by Molly Carlough and Benjamin Harris for the ”Council on Foreign Relations“ highlights how – in the face of the enormous disproportion between the parties in this area, which is the primary problem afflicting Ukraine – the European Union is unable to provide enough to fill the gap left by the United States of America after Donald Trump’s second inauguration at the White House.

The EU continues to rely on the American industrial system despite its clear betrayals, such as the intelligence blackout that ended the Kursk operation and the over six-month halt in military supplies that helped lead to the collapse of the Avdiivka front.

The Russian narrative has penetrated the Western media to the point of implying that the problem in Ukraine is manpower, leading to the convenient recommendation to extend the mobilization to the 18–24 age group. This is the easiest way to wash one’s hands of the matter, reducing it all to an internal issue.

Since the very beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe made the mistake of succumbing to simple narratives about the war, spread by activists, propagandists, and «milbloggers,» which suggested that a poorly armed army would come to Ukraine with shovels and goats to steal chips from washing machines. Meanwhile, billions of euros and top-quality Western technology continued to flow into Russia. Today, the Russian narrative aims to discredit the President of Ukraine and the Commander-in-Chief of its Armed Forces, while tens of thousands of Ukrainians find themselves on the front lines without adequate means to defend their country – i.e., Europe – and Ukrainian cities are being bombed with hundreds of missiles each night significantly impacting the situation at the front.

Winning the war by any means possible, including the material exhaustion of Ukraine, is precisely the goal of the Russian leadership.

Despite this enormous disparity in weapons and ammunition, much of the West still funds the Russian war effort, advising Ukraine to recruit even more men. Entire brigades are all around us, ready to attack but lacking the means to do so. To the half-thousand missiles and nearly a thousand Russian glide bombs raining down daily on our homes and the positions of young soldiers’ positions, Ukraine can only respond with a few dozen home-made drones, even fewer glide bombs, and very few missiles. Made in Ukraine, because Western ones are subject to such absurd restrictions that leave Ukraine fighting with one hand tied behind its back against a stronger opponent.

Meanwhile, millions of artillery shells keep flowing from Pyongyang, along with an equal number of drones coming from Beijing.

Under these conditions, it takes real courage to criticize Zelensky and Syrsky, reminding them that they «don’t have the cards».

Giorgio Provinciali

Giorgio Provinciali)
