Our Darkest Hour

By: Giorgio Provinciali

Live from Ukraine

Before this message reaches its recipients, electricity and a decent connectivity will have to be restored.

I write it anyway, as do many others who have become accustomed to this darkness, hoping that our good Medium friends will be able to share it.

Ukraine has withstood bombardments of up to 1,000 bombs at a time for 1,370 endless days and nights. As its President, the leader of the Resistance, stated, from then on and throughout this entire period, those who fired at us saw not our backs but our eyes. Proud, free, and resilient.

By discrediting him and pressuring him to give in to blackmail, today new hostile forces are pushing Ukraine into even greater darkness.

Seriously, they come from that so-called “free world” that Ukraine defends, with undeserved accusations and threats.

Since arriving in Ukraine, I have met heroes. Among civilians, soldiers, and even clerics – people who encounter every day and, faced with extraordinary events, find courage and strength greater than the challenges themselves. People of all ages, genders, and backgrounds who defend the same values for which my grandfather fought among Italian Resistance fighters opposing nazifascism.

Bearing his name and testimony, I could only find their modern size here.

It has been an honor for me to share the journey of these people, of which I am now proud to be a part, toward the affirmation of the same values my grandfather fought for.

Independence and freedom are non-negotiable.

However, some people from afar have become so accustomed to those absolute values that they take them for granted. When facing colluding criminals trying to force a man’s surrender, there are even those who blame the victim, reserving words that should be theirs.

Being on the side of Ukraine’s, that is, of the free world, today means knowing how to look beyond. Remaining united, knowing how to walk through times of war at a different pace than those living in peace.

Facing existential challenges requires cohesion and capability. Using common sense to define priorities and then act. Strong, resolute, unfailing.

A united Ukraine supported from outside is a defeat for those trying to subjugate it. Feuds, divisions, and accusations strengthen the divisive forces on both the Ukrainian and Western fronts.

Staying on a ship during a storm is hard. Keeping a steady helm is even harder. And yet, a multitude of external spectators dispense instructions from safe harbors on how to do so. If they had shown the same enthusiasm in defining the correct coordinates for their crews, maybe such dangerous changes in direction wouldn’t be needed today.

With their vote – or by abstaining from exercising that right altogether – American and European citizens have shaped much of the course of events. Much could have been prevented by investing in information so that propaganda would not contaminate it.

Day and night, I’ve walked miles to prevent this from happening, but I’ve seen fewer and fewer people willing to do the same around me.

I believe that, in their own small way, everyone can contribute by preventing fake news from spreading. Everyone has the tools to do so, even without coming here.

On the day Ukraine celebrates dignity, freedom, and independence, my plea from the trenches of democracy is to remember how these values are shared victories in a world whose borders are protected here with weapons, but which each of us can and must defend, even from afar, with the tools we have.

Giorgio Provinciali
