The Mask of the West Slips in the Donbas
The Mask of the West Slips in the Donbas

THANKS TO ALL WHO BACK US ALONG OUR WAY
Donetsk Oblast‘— As we emerged from the hovel where we’d holed up while darkness and fog favored the Russian firestorm, we came across a woman’s leg. A KAB glide bomb had swept through a building less than two hundred meters away, demolishing it to its foundations and tearing the limb off up to the groin before hurling it in our direction. Of those bombs, which are too often missing from reports on the vectors of death used against Ukraine, the Russians have fired nearly a thousand this week alone. More than half of them being directed at this area of Donbas, equipped with UMPK kits and latest-generation Chinese microturbojets.

Nearly a thousand kilometers away, in the heart of western Ukraine, the same terrorist matrix had just hours earlier caused destruction in Ternopil’. Rescue efforts went on for more than a day, resulting in 26 deaths and 98 people injured, including 18 children. Nineteen people were burned alive, among them three minors aged 5, 7, and 16. A Russian Kh-101 missile produced in late 2025, i.e., recently, had struck the apartment building where they were sleeping.
The manufacturing date of that device should awaken the consciences of the countries — including European nations — that continue to fund Russian terrorism by buying record amounts of hydrocarbons from Moscow.
Traveling from Donbas to the areas of Kharkiv Oblast’ liberated in 2022, the situation remains unchanged. A few days ago, in Balakliia, we faced the destruction caused by two Russian missiles launched by the Iskander system against two apartment buildings filled with civilians, killing 3 and injuring 13. Both of those missiles were recently made. Further north, in the center of Kharkiv, a barrage of Chinese and North Korean drones and missiles purchased by Russia caused 46 casualties. All civilians.
Dreams, lives, and businesses lost weigh heavily on the scales of those who continue to trade Ukrainians’ blood for Russian gas, LNG, and oil.
Bitterly, this is one of the ingredients in the mortar being used to build what’s called “peace” over the heads of Ukrainians. A figure, cited yesterday by Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenegard, illustrates the situation:
«Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has imported 124 billion euros more from Moscow than it has provided in aid to Kyiv: 187 billion versus 311 billion».
Almost double.
Those who have lived through the war here for 12 years see this hypocrisy persist just as long. The very same Russian-speaking Ukrainians whom Putin’s regime claims to want to “save” by bombing them reject both the Russkij mir and the peace projects that smell of surrender. Written by the same hands that — in the invaded Donbas and Crimea — kept the Russian regime afloat by issuing billion-dollar checks every month.
Without mincing words, these people reject hypocrisy as a binding agent to build the wall of a truce because anyone who speaks to them of “peace” ends up bombing them.

According to Western plans, the wall that should separate democracies from regimes will pass through here, cutting across eastern Ukraine from north to south. It involves demilitarizing those who, with weapons in hand, protected democracy from tyranny and forcing them to abandon lands, homes, and lives defended with blood and tears for twelve years. This is a fate shared by those who would find themselves living in a no-man’s land, under the influence of a regime but belonging to a free country, and despite having fought more than anyone else for that freedom.
Over 12 years, the Russian army has advanced 50 kilometers toward Pokrovsk, with only 11 kilometers toward Toretsk. Here in Donetsk, ditches, barbed wire, minefields, and lethal traps now separate one row of houses from another. The safety corridors—routes of fear or death—are normal paths of communication, used even by civilians on scooters. Bread arrives every morning, and the best meals are still enjoyed here, because those who remain have resisted. And that food tastes like freedom.
So, regardless of who ultimately drops their masks by calling a delusional surrender plan made with the Russians a «peace plan», it’s appropriate for everyone who thinks they can decide the fate of these people to do some soul-searching. If they still have one.
