Zaporizhzhia — I am writing this dispatch after skirting the entire southern flank of Ukraine, which, since the fall of Avdiivka, has seen Russian forces advance from the east, blurring the line between those two fronts.
In the past few hours, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have been forced to retreat from areas including Novouspenivske, Nove, Okhotnyche, Uspenivka, and Novomykolaivka, allowing Russian occupation forces to advance just enough to contain them near Rivnopillia, Solodke, and Yablukove. This tactical retreat was aimed at consolidating forces by occupying more defensible terrain, as the Russians had already razed what’s left of the former urban areas.
Firing over 400 artillery shells—mostly North Korean—each day, targeting shelters and logistics with Chinese-made drones and conscripts from at least 50 different nationalities, the Russians pushed the Ukrainians to retreat, capturing at least three villages.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyj, stated that the Russians exploited the fog to intensify their military activity in those areas, capitalizing on their significant numerical advantage. All of this is true. For days, the fog in these regions has been so thick that it has made it hard to move around, even for those like me who know how to navigate without relying on a GPS signal that is often missing, are familiar with the local places and people, and speak Ukrainian.
However, it is also true that the gap between the forces attacking Ukraine and those defending it is now enormous. Supported by China’s industrial giant, which produces engines and components for UAVs and glide bombs assembled in Russia, Moscow is following Kyiv’s lead in drone warfare to such an extent that it has regained much of the lost ground. Like the Ukrainians, the Russians have formed divisions dedicated to remotely piloting unmanned devices. The difference is that they can rely on a steady supply of equipment from the world’s most productive industrial sector in this field and on the loyalty of the regime that controls it. Simultaneously, Putin can rely on a continuous supply of North Korean artillery, missiles, personnel, and equipment. Additionally, Russian recruitment efforts in Africa, as the Ukrainian Foreign Minister mentioned yesterday, involve recruiting from as many as 36 countries on the continent, providing enough human resources to be deployed with the same intensity as technical ones. The Russian regime also benefits from the complicity of the world’s leading economic and military powers, which, thanks to Washington’s silent approval, hinder NATO’s efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. Explicitly, US officials reiterated yesterday that «at the UN, the United States will not support Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and will not condemn Russian aggression as such». Lastly, the rashist war machine will continue to be fueled by a steady stream of European funds until at least January 2027, when the ban on Russian hydrocarbon imports—something several countries are already planning to circumvent—takes effect. The Lithuanian president admitted that by financing the Russian economy more (with €21.9 billion in 2025 alone) than Ukraine’s (€18.7 billion during the same period), «the EU is financially on Russia’s side».
Ukraine is also facing internal threats. Following a recent investigation into high-level corruption in the energy sector by NABU and SAP, many media outlets, including Ukrainian ones, are now issuing verdicts that favor Putin’s interests even before his trial is scheduled. It is inside these independent anti-corruption bodies—described as ‘untouchable’ by Brussels’ recommendations—that SBU agents recently conducted 49 searches approved by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General. Twenty-five of these searches led to the suspicion and subsequent indictment of 16 senior officials for treason and collaboration with Russian intelligence agencies. These investigations resulted in the detention of top NABU officers, such as Viktor Husarov, who remains held on espionage charges for the Russian Federal Security Service.
To truly succeed, Putin needs Zelensky’s downfall. He is not only Ukraine’s president but also the leader of Ukraine’s Resistance and the main hurdle to Russian victory. With decisions that often saved Ukraine from disaster, Zelensky embodies the «Spirit of Ukraine» that Putin aims to destroy—using the right tools to exploit the vulnerabilities of a democratic nation during wartime.
Given these conditions, it’s remarkable that the Russians managed to infiltrate only 300 men into a city like Pokrovsk, which they’ve been trying to take for two years, and to occupy three small settlements near Oleksandrivka and Huliapole.
