Kyiv — The Russian Federation launched 320 drones and 37 other missiles, including 28 ballistic missiles, against Ukraine last night. Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down 283 drones and five of the seven Kh-59 guided rockets fired by the Russians. All 26 enemy Iskander-M/KNN-23s, two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, and two Iskander-K cruise missiles evaded Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire, with 18 even being lost due to undetection. For the sixth time since October, dozens of these missiles struck civilian targets linked to the supply of gas—and therefore heat—to Ukraine, causing casualties among Naftogaz technicians and workers. This prompted Naftogaz Chairman of the Board of Directors, Serhiy Koretsky, to urge the population to conserve this precious hydrocarbon, saying, «The company will have the strength to overcome this, but every cubic meter of gas saved counts today.»
The Ukrainian Armed Forces responded by striking one of the oldest oil refineries in the Russian Federation at night: the one in Saratov, which, with its 4.8 million tons of refined petroleum products annually, meets a large portion of Putin’s army’s needs.

Beyond Moscow’s adjustments to missile trajectories, launch methods, and hardware, the core issue is the huge decline in foreign arms supplies to Ukraine. Estimates from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy indicate a 43% decline in Western aid to Ukraine, primarily due to two factors: deliveries of military equipment are often lower than promised, and Ukraine's increasing production capacity means that many partners are now transferring funds instead of weapons.
As its Defense Minister, Denys Shmyhal, explained following the Ramstein meetings, Ukraine aims to produce as many as 20 million drones by 2026. This is a considerable amount, especially considering the precarious energy, logistics, and labor conditions of a country at war like Ukraine, which for 12 years has been stripped of much of its richest territories and most productive industrial facilities and has been targeted daily in this manner for 1,330 days. This also includes interceptor drones, of which Shmyhal has promised to reach a record number of 1,000 per day in the near future. Much of the coverage of the Ukrainian skies, now being mortally pierced by the Russian Federation, depends on those UAVs.
In September, the European Commission agreed with Ukraine to allocate €2 billion for drone production. Over half of NATO countries have already made or at least declared their contributions, including €600 million from Norway, €106 million from the Netherlands, €8 million from Canada, and €4 million from Iceland, among others. Italy remains in limbo, suspended in an indefinite state of fine words and imponderable transfers of military equipment, covered by state secrecy and long unreported. However, examining the graphs of the Ukraine Support Tracker, recently updated by researchers at The Kiel Institute for the World Economy, it’s clear that Italy isn’t particularly generous. Regardless of its share of EU aid, Italy (0.14%) lags behind Portugal (0.15%) in direct bilateral support to Ukraine in terms of its GDP share.

Given the radical shift in the American position on this issue, it’s clear that initiatives under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List (PURL) or inspired by the so-called “Danish model” play a crucial role for Europe in a war that directly affects it.

According to testimonies shared on social media by many civilians in the region, Mykolaiv was hit for the first time yesterday by a Russian KAB guided aerial bomb, which flew over 150 km at a speed of nearly 500 km/h. This is also bad news for Moldova and Romania, as similar devices dropped from the same launch point in the Black Sea could impact their territory.
The results of the latest tests, which involved subjecting several integrated systems to demanding conditions at the Directorate General of Armament’s testing grounds in France, have highlighted promising solutions developed by NATO, including the participation (for the first time in its history) of Ukrainian teams. Therefore, it is essential to maintain high levels of attention and funding for initiatives aimed at addressing common threats to both Ukraine and the members of the Atlantic Alliance.
Every dollar invested in Ukraine’s defense ensures the security of Europe.
