I do not know how GDP is calculated for a nation, but

the economic data cannot lie or do not have much discrepancy to real GDP! For example, the city of Shanghai alone has over 15000 high-rising buildings (that are defined to be higher than 35 meters or 12 stories), which is more than the all such similar buildings in the States and Canada combined!
