Xcaret is a Natural Preserve Area - the ban of Sunscreen and Suntan lotion is to prevent the harmful chemicals get into water/lagoon, does interfere the delicate eco system there.
You can consider it as a waterpark built on a preserved Natural environment - where the most famous activity is Dolphin Encounter (of course it is not cheap).
Finally you can take a plane to Chichen Itza instead of sitting in a car for 3 (most likely looonger than that) one-way ... There is ONE and the ONLY Motorway that is used by everyone - does not matter you are in a tour or drive yourself - unless you FLY and there are flights between the 2 places - although flying in small aircraft is another, totally different, issue to look at.
