You do not need to carry too much cash.

If you are Bank of America customer,  you may take cash (Mexican pesos) out of ATM machine from Santender Bank without bank charge.   Other US banks may have their own partners in Mexico.   You may pay with US dollars,  but I prefer to use pesos.    It is hard to get change back with US $.   

You may use credit card too.   Be aware of the foreign transaction fees of your card.
