you might as well concentrate your trip in the Pacific side of Mexico, and include California Baja (Cabo San Lucus).
Cancun is at the Yucantan Peninsula, the Caribbean side.
Personally I would do the 2 sides separately. The Pacific side of Mexico and Sea of Cortez is very different from the Yucantan Peninsula. More Mexico I may say.
In Cancun, especially in hotel zone, you hardly find any authentic Mexico feeling.
