Can a human body block machine gun bullets?

In Korean War, the American Infantry widely used Browning M1919 Medium Machine Guns (air cooled) and Browning M1917 Water-Cooled Heavy Machine Guns. or BAR (Light Machine Guns), or M1 Garand Semi-Automatic rifle. I am not a military expert, but it seems to me that the 0.3 inch caliber bullets are quite powerful. They can easily knock a person down.
