After his son died, I think Mao didn't even care who should be his successor. and in chinese culture, only son would be legal accepted as the successor by all others. Mao must know his nephew and his wife can't be accepted by any of his comrades. in his heart, Mao never wanted a successor.
A dictator never want a successor except he has a son or he can live forever.
