Under the 1945 Chinese (KMT)-Russian Treaty, China agreed to give up Outer Mongolia, which, after a plebiscite, became a nominally independent country. In return Stalin handed over half of Manchuria to KMT from CCP forces who entered the Russian controlled Manchuria before KMT did after Japanese surender.
