Allyn was asked to provide brief reports to the state department, an activity he should probably have thought twice about. These reports must also have seemed relatively innocuous, both because he didn’t have all that much to report, and the information was collected fairly informally. He never saw himself as a spy. The new Chinese government saw things differently, however, and both husband and wife were ultimately arrested and imprisoned as foreign agents.

退伍后的瑞克特和阿黛尔来到了美国费城，进入宾斯法尼亚大学东亚系进修汉语，也正是这段时间，他们有了属于自己的中文名字：瑞克特为自己取名为李克，阿黛尔则取名为李又安。在宾大学习期间，夫妇二人颇受汉学家卜德欣赏，在1948年还拿到了富布莱特项目的奖学金。
