Mao was a typical communist dictator. Up to now, every communist country had its own stalin, more or less.
both stalin and mao killed in millions, a character shared also by hitler.
Mao role was succeeded by Pol Pat of Cambordia, and Kims of North Korea. None of Mao's successors was able to create impact to the world in Mao's scale, but they all killed people in their countries by portion.
