1897年11月1日，在中国山东巨野县，两名传教的德国天主教神父被当地闹事的村民杀死。德国威廉二世电令远东舰队："中国人的蛮横挑衅已经突破了我国忍耐的极限。舰队立即驶往胶州湾，占领该处现有村镇，并采取严厉报复手段。"

　　次年3月，清政府被迫在中德《胶澳租界条约》签字，德国占有了胶州湾和整个山东的开矿权、铁路建设权。

使与使馆卫队进京

　　1860年，清政府与英法签署《天津条约》，允许在北京设立使馆。1861年，英法两国公使进入北京，在距紫禁城仅千余米的东交民巷率先设立使馆。之后俄、日、美等各国也陆续在这里开馆。

李鸿章（1823--1901）大学士，直隶总督兼北洋通商事务大臣。十九世纪六十年代，开办了一批军工厂和民用工厂并建立北洋水师。1875年以后，列强与中国签定的不平等条约，如《烟台条约》、《中法新约》、《马关条约》、《中俄密约》等尽系李鸿章代表谈判、签字。1900年10月被清政府任命为全权议和大臣，偕皇族亲王与各国公使谈判议和。

图为11国公使--组成联军的八国加上西、比、荷三国，在共同商讨对中国的议和大纲。从1900年10月到是年年底，11国围绕谈判内容，争执不休，直到12月24日才统一了意见，向清政府提出了有12条条款的"议和大纲"。清政府被迫一条不改地接受列强的"议和大纲"为既定条约。这个大纲里，"道歉"、"惩凶"、"驻军"、"赔款"。这个议和大纲是《辛丑条约》的蓝本。

一个八国联军水兵眼中的中国

1900年，义和拳的暴乱和八国联军的报复性入侵使古老的中国经历了一个难以令人忘怀的世纪之首，关于那一年的种种，我们可以看到的资料已经很多而无需多加描述。

沃尔特.库尔兹，一位德国牧师叛逆性颇强的儿子，这时候正作为德意志帝国的一名水兵服役，他在他的相册里保存下了一批照片。当几十年后他的孙子不经意的翻开相册时，才发现原来这正包括了1900年八国联军入侵中国和随后岁月里库尔兹在中国服役留下的影象。

这个相册里的很多照片，似乎都没有见于发表，因此，我觉得把它在这里贴出来，也许带有一种历史的见证意义。

也许，它可以让我们回到那个时代，重新感受一个世纪以前那个动荡而古老的中国。

沃尔特•库尔兹 1895-1908年服役于德国皇家海军，可惜他没有留下多少文字，今天人们除了知道他曾经在阿尔萨斯号和卢克斯号军舰服役，参加过美西战争和八国联军入侵北京以外，对他就一无所知了。

在中国水域活动的卢克斯号炮舰，库尔兹就在它的上面服役，可是照片是否是他照的则没有证据，可以看到周围中国民用的舢板聚集成群。

1900年，义和拳匪围攻使馆后，八国联军在天津登陆，开始了攻击北京的战斗。

这是一支奇怪的部队，看起来似乎是英军在威海卫当地招募的乡勇

炮台守军全军覆没，守将罗荣光负伤后自尽，八国联军也有二十多人伤亡。这是一艘被击沉的俄国炮舰

战斗中被击毁的清军炮阵地，可见清军的火炮带有在城墙上移动的滑轨，已经比在第二次鸦片战争中的装备好了很多。

巷战后的市区

炮台上依然可以看到的弹痕。

北京的城防工事，依然是依托古老的城墙。可惜，这古老的城墙，在解放后被永远的埋葬在二环路这个名词里了，只有德胜门孤独的留在那里。这是哪座城门呢？恕我眼拙。

又是一批被捕获准备杀掉的拳匪。我本身对义和团运动的意义评价不高，因为它不但是反对外国人，也反对一切现代文明。但是看到这几条视死如归的汉子，还是不禁为他们的不屈感到深切的震动。
