I do meet some Indian professors from US in Beijing in 1980s. They were the best too in my area.

What I am saying is that the research level of PRC in 1980s was very low. Mao has to take some responsibility since there was almost no progress for at least 10 years under his leadership.

I also met quite a few Chinese from US and singapore in Beijing and their research level was very high too.
