if he wants to work for law firms here, he might have a hard time. But after reading one of his follow-up posts, I got the impression that going back is acceptable to him. With a JD degree, he can teach or practice in China. He may even open his own practice here.

As said earlier, big law firms or even medium-size law firms are out of reach for him. Not every body likes to work in a big law firm anyway.
