is child support retroactive?

Old cat and all friends,

A few years ago I got child support order from court. A few years later during discovery when I am seeking child support arrear, I found he actually has huge income than before, which could triple the current child spoort. Could the child support be retroactive?

I am in CA. My attorney said no. Is he right?
