You will need to pay your esitmated tax every quarter to feds and state. You can download 2004 1040 ES from irs.gov. It has worksheet to calculate how much you need to pay each quarter. State will be the same.

As a independent consultant, you need to file as self employed. In the case of federal tax, you will need to include self employed tax.
