Visa is travel document. You only need it when entering U.S. Duration of legal staying in the States depends on the I 20(F1) or I 797(H1) or IAP66(J1). The I 94 expiration date should be consistent with I 20 or I797 or IAP 66, not the visa expiration date. Keep it in mind.
