What is your citizenship?

I have a German friend who stayed in US for a while after employment ended. She drove to Canada and came back, with her returning to Germany airline ticket, she got a visa or some kind of stamp pretty easily. What I mean is, if you have European country passport, you can travel in US without visa. But you probably need to go through custom/border first.
