my mistake?

went to small claim court as defendent, but plaintiff lawyer was absent on court date.

Did i make a mistake by agreeing on postponing the matter? What if i insisted on settling the difference that day in the absence of plantiff lawyer?

Also, i felt the court guy (lawyer? i dont what role) who told me to postpone, is very much sided with the plaintiff lawyer. Is this american-style corruption?
