ask STP and fajushi

Came to US in July of 2000 with J1 visa, changed to H1B visa in August of 2003. Hu*****and worked in April and May of 2003 with J2 visa (income less than 5000). I have the federal tax exemption before July of 2003. Please help

1. Can we file jointly?
2. If not, we have to file our own 1040NR, yes? If this is the case, can we claim personal deduction seperately? Can I claim standard deduction? Can I claim the deduction for my hu*****and's tuiation?

Any other suggetion to save the money are deeply appreciated!!
