You need to respond to the landlord's unlawful detainer complaint right away by filing a response with the court. If you do not file the response within 5 days after being served with the summons, the landlord will enter a default judgement against you. After you file the response, the court will set a hearing date and you can meet the "Bao Blue Sky" (judge) to present copies of the cancelled checks to indicate you had paid on time.

Never, never delay until the deadline passes and a default judgment is entered against you. Meantime you should contact the landlord right away to explain and fax them copies of the checks. They might withdraw their case if they found it was a mistake.
