There are exceptions as to unauthorized copy. In litigation, it is termed fair use defense. Sony's VCR case is very popular and influential in copyright law. The Court ruled that time-shift constitutes fair defense. However, the fair use defense doesn't extend to downloading motion pictures without copyright owner's consent.

As to the photocopy of testbooks, you can copy pages and chapters of a book. However, it is unlawful if you copy more than half pages of the book.
