renter's insurance

Renter's insurnce includes liability protection, which would pay for damages caused by the renter.

You can continue wait for the renter's insurance to pay, or you can sue the renter (not the insurance company) for damages.  The insurance company are obligated to stand in place of the renter and answer the suit. 

Your damage exceeds the small claim court limit, don't hesitate to find a lawyer, the lawyer's fee should be coverred by compensation.
