Confused with Line 6 of 1040nr

1040NR-EZ， I fill in $5000 in Line 6 for deduction per tax treaty according to the instruction. but this line will not be used to calculate the adjusted income. Other than line 6, there is no place we can deduct this $5000. Why we are asked to fill in $5000 in the line 6 and then Line 6 is not calculated for adjusted income???
