In reality, the owner can only say I paid taxed on the land according to my deed. This complication made it extremely difficult to declare adverse possession. On the other hand, prescriptive easement doesn't have this requirement regarding tax. 

Bottom line, to avoid future headaches, it's recommended that one get a survey before buying a property, especially an old property.
