But in no way you can use defendant's friend.

Usually service of process to a person could be:
(1) in person
(2) in his home, to a person that lives there and above 18 years old
(3) nail and mail: leave a copy of summon at his home, and then mail a copy to the same address using certified/registered mail.

Different states have different versions of the above rules.
