Dealing with traffic tickets is normally a two step process: arraignment and trial. If you plead guilty or no contest, then you will need to pay the fine and the matter is over. If you plead not guilty, then your matter automatically goes to trial, with the court date shown on your ticket.

The short answer is, yes, you must go to trial to contest the ticket.
