What can I claim as a victim

Hi,

A thief broken my car window and another SUV window to steal bags from our car and was caught in the scene by the other guy, both of our bags are got back.

The court ask me to provide evidence of my loss, try to get the thief to pay for it. My expense was the broken car window and the few things in my car was totally $350, but the other victim claimed 44000, I am just wondering what things can be so expensive inside his car that got damaged.

Should I ask for more?
