rejected by the EDD for unemployment benefit

I have been rejected by the EDD for unemployment benefit because i did not file the claim on time and for some how I miss the interview phone calls scheduled by EDD. Does anyone have any suggestion? The EDD's 800 numer is very difficult to get through. Please help me if you have similar experience (hope not) or suggestion.
