You still don't understand why people are protesting. Nobody is against the 6 years old, but the adults behind him. This talk show is scripted, and the show's staff, including the ones who wrote the script and the ones who edited it and approved it for airing are the ones that we are against. They were manipulating a 6 year old boy to say what they don't dare to say. At least, they should know better that its a bad joke and there's nothing funny about it at all.
also, lots of people do feel like they would not dare to ever pull the same joke off on blacks and Jews. And this judgement is based on common sense, past experience and the history of the reactions that these two groups have had towards the similar situations. It's called an educated guess. You were simply stating "it's not true that they don't dare to joke about blacks n Jews". First of all, what makes you so confident to say "it's not true"? Maybe you should ask around and survey people from other backgrounds what their reaction would be if you change Chinese to their backgrounds in the exact same "joke". i think at least it would give you some actual statistics to back yourself up before you get too confident. Second of all, yes there are jokes about Asians, blacks and Jews, and I enjoy lots of jokes myself about Asian people, and Chinese ppl to be specific. I even joke about my own Chinese root sometimes when i hang out with friends from different backgrounds. I also love Russell peters's stand-up comedies and can never get bored of them. However, there's always a bottom line for everything, even jokes. "I'm just joking" is not a free pass for someone to get away with every comment/joke that he makes. Entertainment nature of that show does not grant the staff and the host the right to joke freely about absolutely anything publicly, especially when it involves in killing a whole country or genocide of a whole race. It's never been funny and would never get funny ever. As a talk show aired publicly, it needs to be funny, and responsible at the same time. By the way, speaking about genocide, I personally think that it's qualified to be a genocide if it involves in killing all the people in a country, and I'm confident that many people would agree with you. I'm not sure hat made you jump when this word is used in this incident. Maybe you have a different definition about genocide, which is probably very different from rest of ours.
The last but not least, I agree with you that you can spin "it's an interesting idea" anyway you like because the world interesting is not necessarily an affirmative word, and sometimes it could be a polite way to indicate the quite opposite. However, you missed other key words that he said later. One of them being: "should we ALLOW Chinese to live?" Every life in this world is equal, and not one race is superior to another and has the authority to "allow" another to live. This question is fundamentally wrong regardless of his intention when he said it.
For all the reasons above, I feel proud for my people to finally stand up to things that they don't feel right about, and I feel the victory today when I read that capac has filed an official complaint to abc, no matter what people like you have to say.
