这些学校自费设立的MDPHD，需要通过某种国家级评估质量审核后才有可能拿到NIH资助，通常都是排名很高的医学院才能得到NIH资助，很多排名靠后的学校都希望设立MDPHD program因为这会影响到学校学术声誉和将来申请科研经费的渠道和多少。听说，有些被取消的MDPHD是因为没有通过审核评估，也就是学校毕业的MDPHD质量不高，并非都是经费问题。NIH每年大约资助600-700名MDPHD学生，占每年新招医学生的3%左右。
