If you are talking about the situation in the US, most common cases are that the child (usually minor) will stay with mom (unless she has issues such as drug, mental problem, etc), and dad pays the support to make sure the child's living standard won't get impacted. Of course dad has the right to visit the child regularly.

I don't know the same situation in China, but I do know femals don't have much to fight there.
