我的一点看法。。。

Estate planning 是很多blended family 的 big hairy issue。 

Prenup是很重要的， 尤其对于混合家庭来说。 不是很多人理解的那样简单婚前婚后财产的问题， 它可以帮助你sort out your finances 不管婚姻以何种方式终结（离婚或者一方的死亡）。当然， 婚后也可以订立协议， 尽管这时的bargaining power 会不一样。   

有人认为最简单的方式就是 life-insurance policy 把你的孩子列为beneficiary/beneficiaries。 如果insurance 会trigger estate tax , 可以用考虑irrevocable life-insurance trust, which keeps the money out of the estate.

或者你可以给你的配偶建立marital trust, such as a qualified terminable interest property trust, or QTIP. 这类trust在 surviving spouse死亡时终结, 届时property goes to the heirs.

即使你们已经作出了安排， 你也可以update your will,更换retirement plans and insurance policies受益人 to reflect your new circumstances.

如果你真有想法， 就开诚布公地和老公谈谈， 同时一定要让trust and estate的律师保护尤其你孩子的最大利益。 先小人后君子， 会避免很多不必要的麻烦和纠结。
