MsLeading, in your case, does the husband like the job?

Sounded like, because you focus on "辛苦付出", then the wife would feel "guilty" logically.

However, a job shouldn't just 辛苦付出 (for most well educated people), it's also a "gain"(intellectually) and a "joy" at a certain level.  If it is  "gain" and "joy" for him, would you still feel guilty for yourself?

If the job is becoming a pure 辛苦付出, maybe it's time for him to look for something else more enjoyable to do?
